Recent Polish books about Ukraine

We wrote at the end of last year about Polish books on Ukraine; this new post mentions some of those received so far in 2023 relating to Russia’s full-scale invasion.

  • To nie kraj, to ludzie : historie zebrane na granicy / Joanna Racewicz. (2022)
    • Coverage of the exodus of Ukrainians into foreign refuge, written by a journalist who was asked to come and help bear witness to the plight of the refugees crossing the Polish border.
  • Ukraińskie uchodźczynie wojenne : tożsamość, trauma, nadzieja / Aleksandra Boroń, Agnieszka Gromkowska-Melosik. (2022)
    • The experiences of Ukrainian refugees living abroad (the subtitle reads: identity, trauma, hope).
  • Opór : Ukraińcy wobec rosyjskiej inwazji / Paweł Pieniążek. (2023)
    • A book about resistance and its different forms right across Ukrainian society to the Russian invasion.
  • Śniadanie pachnie trupem : Ukraina na wojnie / Zbigniew Parafianowicz. (2022)
    • Polish reportage from inside Ukraine from the very beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
  • Hootin Pooy / scenariusz: Brajan Mickiewicz ; rysunki: Szczezz [and fifteen others]. (2023)
    • A dark comic book about Russian aggression and invasion featuring the work of 16 artists.  The title of the book plays with the Putin khuĭlo insult.
  • Wagnerowcy : psy wojny Putina / Grzegorz Kuczyński. (2022)
    • An exploration of the notorious Wagner Group and its origins.  (Since the book’s publication, Wagner has of course become a growing concern for Poland, with the mercenary army now closer to its borders in its new Belarusian base.)

My great thanks to my colleague for selecting, ordering, cataloguing, and photographing these books.
