Cambridge University Library’s trial of RetroNews (French historical newspapers database)

Cambridge University Libraries just started a one-month trial of RetroNews, a database from the Bibliothèque nationale de France, which provides access to about 2000 (primarily French) newspaper titles published between 1631 and 1950. Part of its content is available only by subscription, in contrast to the BnF’s freely accessible material on its digital library Gallica (only 150 of the 2000 RetroNews titles are also available on Gallica).

The subscription to RetroNews offers advanced access to the digitised periodicals and advanced search functions, in particular the option to download results in pdf or text format. It should also be possible to extract search results in csv or xls format; and to request the extraction of text and metadata of a specific search. RetroNews provides access to 4000 items of new editorial content produced by academics and journalists, including articles, interviews, videos, and podcasts / readings of the newspaper pieces by professional actors. ‘Soviet woman’ digital archive on trial access : the January 2021 Slavonic item of the month

As the Electronic Collection Management team announced in this blog post, Cambridge readers with Raven accounts now have trial access to the East View digital archive of Soviet woman.

The first issue came out in late 1945.  Its introduction discussed the purpose and place of this new bi-monthly title, saying “Soviet Woman is a new illustrated literary, art, and socio-political magazine whose purpose is to deal comprehensively with the work of Soviet women in industry and their part in social, political and cultural activities.  Our magazine will study and summarize in the light of peacetime problems the experience gained by women during the war”. Good news – access to these three resources has generously been extended by East View for Cambridge staff and students until 30 September 2020.

Languages across Borders

East View have opened up access to their Rossiĭskaia gazeta Digital Archive, Novaia gazeta Digital Archive, and Essential Russian Classics e-book collection to Cambridge staff and students until the 31st of July.

ebooks po-russki : the April (to 1 June) 2020 Slavonic items of the month

Russian ebooks are a novelty for Cambridge, and it is fantastic that our University staff and students can now try out three ebook platforms supplied through the vendor MIPP until 1 June.  This blog post gives an overview of the databases.  Do please give feedback about any/all of them.

BiblioPlanet

This platform contains over 70,000 arts, humanities, and social sciences ebooks, plus journals, audiobooks, reference works and digital maps.  A general search box is available at the top, with an advanced search option below it on the right; note that searches do not seem to include ebook contents but rather their title and author information only.  A list of subjects is provided on the left; each subject can be expanded to show subdivisions.  When you click on a specific subdivision, you can see sample books and then, beneath them, a list of the books in that subdivision. New Europresse subscription: online access to French newspapers and magazines

After receiving very positive trial feedback and approval of the Library Accessions Committee, Cambridge University is now subscribing to the academic version of Europresse, an aggregator which allows online access to many French and Francophone national and regional newspapers and magazines including Le Monde (from 1944), Le Figaro, Libération, L’Humanité, Les Echos, La Tribune ; Le Soir, Le Temps ; Le Parisien, Ouest-France, La Provence ; L’Express, Le Point, Marianne, L’Obs, Le Monde diplomatique etc.

Trial access: BIZ Biblioteca Italiana Zanichelli

The University of Cambridge has trial access to the BIZ Biblioteca Italiana Zanichelli resource until 17 July 2018 via this link.

Access is available on or off campus but is restricted to 5 simultaneous users, so if you have finished your session please remember to exit your browser session.

You do not need to login, access to the  Biblioteca Italiana Zanichelli is enabled on the left of the platform under “Bookshelf”.

The BIZ (Italian Library Zanichelli) is an online collection of over 1,000 texts of Italian literature up  to the early decades of the twentieth century.

The University Library has arranged trial access to four new electronic resources on offer from East View.  Please send feedback to slavonic@lib.cam.ac.uk by the end of Tuesday 7 February to meet Accessions Committee deadlines.  Resources with clear academic and student support will then be recommended to the Committee for purchase.

Access (available through Raven or within the cam domain) will last until 21 February.  Details about each backfile/database follow, with individual links.  All resources on trial can also be accessed through the general East View entry on this page. Trial access to ‘Krokodil’, ‘Russkaia literatura’, and the Dostoevsky Research Series

Three new East View e-resources have been made available on trial, including the backfiles of the satirical magazine Krokodil and the literary journal Russkaia literatura.  In addition, we are also trying out a Russian e-book set, with trial access to the Dostoevskii : materialy i issledovaniia.  Feedback is keenly sought by Friday 1 May, to slavonic@lib.cam.ac.uk.

Trial access to Italian-language titles on Casalini’s Torrossa ebooks platform

Cambridge University Library is pleased to announce that trial access is now available to 119 Italian-language titles on Casalini Libri’s Torrossa ebooks platform. Three current collections of scholarly titles are included in this trial; Language and Literature (49 ebooks), Cinema and Theatre (40), and Cultural Studies (30).torrossa - Casalini full-text platfor,

The ebooks are available from the platform link here and are searchable in the LibrarySearch catalogue. Full-text access is available both on and off campus (using a Raven login).
