Guide to searching material on North Africa in Cambridge University Libraries

Following the Francophone and Arabic display of books from North Africa, including books on textiles, organised at the University Library, this guide aims to facilitate more in-depth research into CULs’ print and electronic collections.

Print collections

There are books relating to North Africa in many other parts of the UL open shelves, for example, in the or Art or Literature sections etc.

a, b, c, d, e corresponds to the largest to the smallest format.

Nb : you can Browse by classmarks on iDiscover, for example books starting with 645:4. However, most of the recent acquisitions will be closed access material that you can request via iDiscover.

In particular:

Includes hundreds of publications from outside of France -with about 35 titles published in Algeria, and a couple from Tunisia and Morocco.

iDiscover can provide approximate search results (see with “Alger” for example) but you can also use the metadata provided in the 2022 Liberation collection dataset (do ask if you would like to access the updated dataset / specific searches).

Both print and manuscripts, with monographs and periodicals. It is useful to use the RCS printed collections guide / card catalogue in the Rare books reading room to search by country.

You can search by classmark in iDiscover, but not everything is online, it varies by country. In the Rare books reading room, the Official Publications print class catalogues at the numbers above will be much more comprehensive.

Some books are on open access at West 4 (4th floor of the UL, at the back). Withdrawn Moh books, now part of Rare Books, are largely accessions of books in Arabic, Persian and Turkish published in the West before 1850, or in the Middle East before 1900. Further collections in these and other Near Eastern languages are found in S810-S848 (early printing, including the collection of Ibrahim Müteferrika imprints) and 6/7810-6/7848 (17th and 18th century books).

Maps, atlases, older and modern. Only a small portion of the Maps holdings are on iDiscover : it is best to consult in the Maps reading room the printed card catalogues by country or city.

Some (older) holdings are held at the Library Storage Facility and need to be requested in advance via iDiscover.

Includes Special Collections and some non-English material.

Digital resources

Digitisations of material held across the UL and Cambridge libraries. Includes Islamic Manuscripts.

Resources on :

RetroNews, the press site of the Bibliothèque nationale de France, gives access to more than 2000 press titles published between 1631 and 1952, adding to the resources present on Gallica. It works as a digital space for consulting newspapers archives, a research tool and a magazine.

Thématiques : Colonies (articles, videos, focus on certain events, based on the digitised historical press).
