Beautiful Ukrainian donations : the April 2024 Ukrainian item(s) of the month

A few weeks ago, we were fortunate enough to receive a donation of five lovely books from the Kharkiv-based publisher Oleksandr Savchook and the organisation Progress-14.

The five donations add to the 12 Savchook titles we had previously bought and which were published between 2014 and 2021.  The five new publications, which reflect the core strengths of Mr Savchook’s publishing house in terms of their concentration on the arts, were published in 2022 and 2023 and make very welcome additions to Cambridge’s Ukrainian collection.

New books, in reverse date order of publication

  • Li︠u︡bov Panchenko : povernenni︠a︡ : alʹbom / peredm. Olena Lodzynsʹka, Vasylʹ Perevalʹsʹkyĭ, Diana Klochko. (2023)
    • A really important addition for us – a major (and Ukrainian-English bilingual) catalogue of works by the Ukrainian artist Li︠u︡bov Panchenko, 1938-2022, who died in hospital after she had been found starving in her home after the liberation of Bucha from Russian forces.  It’s wonderful that Cambridge readers can now access her exquisite works through this donation.
  • Vasylʹ Krychevsʹkyĭ : ornamentni kompozyt︠s︡iï : alʹbom / upori︠a︡dnyk tomu O. O. Savchuk. (2023)
    • A beautiful bilingual catalogue of ornamental designs by Vasylʹ Krychevsʹkyĭ which follows a 2-volume catalogue of his general work which was published by Oleksandr Savchook between 2016 and 2020 and also available in the UL (see list below)
    • Since the book has got a dust jacket which is an integral part of its design, the book will be held at the Library Storage Facility (where book covers can be retained), and the book is still on its way so does not show up in iDiscover yet
  • Dniprovi porohy : alʹbom fotohrafiĭ z heohrafichno-istorychnym narysom / D.I. I︠A︡vornyt︠s︡ʹkyĭ ; Vlasova O.I︠U︡., peredmova, prymitky. (2023)
    • A painstaking reprint of a 1928 photo-led publication about the Dnipro River’s geography and history.
  • Tryptykh pro pryznachenni︠a︡ Ukraïny / I︠U︡riĭ Shevelʹov ; upori︠a︡d. V. Skli︠a︡rova, T. Danʹko. (2023)
    • A collection of essays on Ukraine by I︠U︡riĭ Shevelʹov (George Shevelov), a Ukrainian philologist who spent most of his working life in US universities and who also widely published under his pseudonym I︠U︡riĭ Sherekh.
  • Filosofii︠a︡ teatru / Lesʹ Kurbas. (2022)
    • A 918-page collection of works about the theatre by famed director Lesʹ Kurbas who was killed in the Stalinist purges.

Books acquired previously, also in reverse date order

Note that our catalogue records for all these books have the publisher as “Savchuk” (per the standard Library of Congress romanisation of the publisher’s name (Савчук)).

We are extremely grateful to Mr Savchook and to Progress-14.  That such important material continues to be produced even under the bombardment that Kharkiv has suffered over the past two years (which has risen even more sharply in recent days and weeks) is quite incredible.  You can see these books and much more on the Savchook site: https://savchook.com/en/
