Last autumn we had the opportunity to select over 50 titles for the UL from the library of the late Dr Paul Ries. This was made possible through the kind support of Professor Roger Paulin who provided us with the contact, supplied us with lists and highlighted titles of particular interest to the UL. The late Dr Paul Ries (1932-2020) was for many years University Lecturer in Scandinavian Studies at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages of the University of Cambridge. He specialized in Danish language, literature and civilization. This is of course reflected in his library, and we accordingly selected a considerable number of titles on Scandinavian topics. Dr Ries also had an interest in the history of newspapers. Prof. Paulin told us that Dr Ries would go regularly to Bremen to do research at the Abteilung Deutsche Presseforschung der Universitätsbibliothek Bremen (now Institut “Deutsche Presseforschung”, Universität Bremen). One other area of particular interest of Dr Ries was the history of psychoanalysis. Again, we selected titles in these subjects. Most titles in Dr Ries’ library were published in the 19th and 20th centuries but there were a few antiquarian titles we found and could take for the UL. In the gallery below we aim to give an impression of the range of topics covered in the books from Dr Ries’ library. For more complete information about the books one should search iDiscover with the keywords “Paul Ries former owner”. I hope that the books we selected prove a useful addition to the UL holdings.
